Bridge over Johan van Hasseltkanaal, Amsterdam
This design for a new movable bridge over
Johan van Hasseltkanaal was to open up the former Shell grounds, now a major
development site. Inspired by the rugged beauty of the old shipyards in North
Amsterdam, its no-nonsense steel structure was to span the more than
400-metre-wide docking basin efficiently, but also elegantly. The central road
for motorized vehicles has a lane for cyclists and pedestrians on either side.
Arching delta trusses separate the different traffic flows, with light fittings
at the nodes to illuminate the truss construction at night.
