House Kralingse Plas, Rotterdam
The setting heavily
influenced the design of this house. It was built on the last remaining piece
of building land facing the lake (Kralingse Plas). So as to fully relate the
surroundings to the house the architects designed a tall and relatively shallow
volume that screens the garden from the busy street. If the front facade is
fairly inscrutable, the facade at the
rear opens up to the garden. The scale of the house is adapted to its three
much larger neighbours and adopts the build-up of one of them, a villa by
Brinkman and Van der Vlugt. On the first floor is the main level with the
living/dining room and a balcony overlooking the garden. The front facade is in
dark-grey panels of enamelled glass interspersed with double glazing whose
opening parts are of toughened glass. The disposition of these openings is
exclusively informed by the prospect of Kralingse Plas.
