Kulturbau and Mall, Koblenz
The Kulturbau Koblenz and the large shopping mall ´Forum Mittelrhein´ together form the design for the redevelopment of the central square of Koblenz. This square, the Zentralplatz (Central Square), not only connects the various districts of Koblenz with each other but also has an important function as a public transport interchange and place where various pedestrian flows come together. The Mall consists of 20.000 m² net floor space for shops and commercial functions. The Kulturbau serves a multitude of cultural users and tourist functions. It houses the Mittelrhein-Museum, the public library/ media center of Koblenz and the Tourist Office. A huge public accessible roof terrace becomes a new public space and allows 360° views over the Unesco Heritage of the ´oberes Mittelrheintal´. The various features are grouped around a central atrium with communal facilities, ensuring a positive interaction between the diverse groups of users. The Kulturbau and the Mall will function as two autonomous buildings, which have the opportunity to develop independently. The Kulturbau, with its stunning appearance, is as a beacon on the newly developed plaza. Yet together the buildings form a strong urban planning unity at the Zentralplatz. The two volumes provide a new design of a busy square, where in the future traffic and pedestrian flows will be led through in a natural and casual manner.
